Psych Evaluations and Why They’re Important

Getting a diagnosis for a mental illness can be comforting as it allows for people to make sense of symptoms that are very confusing if you don’t know what they are or why they are happening to you. The symptoms of mental illnesses can cause people to feel isolated, as if they were the only ones experiencing these feelings. By performing a psychological evaluation and providing a clear and concise diagnosis, people are able to realize that there is a reason for their symptoms, they are not alone in their struggles, and that there are treatments that can allow them to live full and complete lives in spite of their mental illness.

With knowledge comes understanding. A diagnosis from a psychological evaluation may shift a sense of self-blame that a person or their family members may have had regarding the symptoms being experienced. Instead of being looked at as a kid who can’t focus, having a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) can allow for a teacher to be more understanding and accommodating of that student’s situation, creating a better learning environment for everyone involved. Or a person who is perceived to be lazy and lacking motivation by their family members can begin to receive support after they have been given a diagnosis of depression.

The purpose of a psychological evaluation is to bring understanding while also showing people that there are treatment methods that can be used so that they can live their best life. A diagnosis isn’t meant to place someone in a box. A person’s worth and character cannot be defined by their mental illness. By conducting an evaluation, and by utilizing treatment, such as Psychotherapy sessions, a person is able to uncover what the cause is for most of these symptoms and can then ultimately begin to heal and thrive.

If you or anyone else feels lost or isolated due to poor mental health, don’t be afraid to ask for professional help.
