Neurofeedback

Also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback or neurotherapy, is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that aims to determine brain function. It involves monitoring the electrical activity of the brain in real-time and providing feedback to the individual to help them learn how to self-regulate and optimize brain functioning.

During a neurofeedback session, sensors that are attached to a cap that the client wears during the session are displayed on a computer screen that measures the electrical activity of the brain. Over the course of multiple sessions, therapists monitor the client's progress and may adjust the neurofeedback protocols based on individual responses. The aim is to promote lasting changes in brain activity that contribute to improved mental health and well-being.

Assessment: The process often begins with an initial assessment, which may include a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) or brain mapping. This assessment helps identify patterns of brain activity and areas that may be functioning irregularly.

Learning and Self-Regulation: Over multiple sessions, the individual learns to consciously or unconsciously alter their brainwave patterns to achieve the desired feedback. The goal is to promote self-regulation and improve brain functioning.

Neurofeedback is often used as a therapeutic intervention for various conditions, including:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): To improve focus and attention.

  • Anxiety and Stress: To promote relaxation and stress reduction.

  • Mood Disorders: To regulate emotional states.

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): To aid in cognitive rehabilitation.

  • Memory Loss Studies have also linked neurofeedback training to improving memory.
